As the nation celebrates the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Indianapolis prepares for a series of events to honor the Civil Rights leader for MLK Day of service.

MLK Day at the Statehouse

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Indiana Holiday Commission in conjunction with the Indiana Civil Rights Commission, Indiana Black Expo and AFSCME Local 725 is hosting the 33rd Annual State of Indiana Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Celebration Jan. 10 at the Indiana War Memorial: Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Downtown Indianapolis. Additionally, the hosts will present a Celebration and Award Ceremony on Jan. 11 at the Indiana Statehouse. The ceremony includes a wreath placement in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Founders Breakfast

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Center hosts its annual Founders Breakfast Jan. 12 at North United Methodist Church, located at 3808 N. Meridian St., from 7:30-9:30 a.m. The Founders Breakfast is a chance to strengthen relationships by connecting with the past, present and future of the MLK Center. RVSP is required.

MLK Birthday Celebration Service

Join the Indiana Christian Leadership Conference (ICLC) as it hosts the 55th Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration Service Jan. 15 at St John’s Missionary Baptist Church, 1651 Dr. Andrew J. Brown Ave., on the city’s east side. Rev. Dr. Philip L. Shobe hosts the service. The official program commences at 11 a.m.

MLK Day Books and Breakfast

Join the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Center alongside the Hub for Black Affairs at Butler University for its annual Books and Breakfast Jan. 15. This year, the theme is “Selma & I Have a Dream: A Film Showing and Close Textual Reading.” Books and Breakfast is from 10 a.m. until noon. The event is free of charge.

Seeds of Caring

Join Seeds of Caring for their free MLK Day of Service event in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Jan. 15. Seeds of Caring is partnering with the Madam Walker Legacy Center to provide multiple stations where children ages 2-12 can engage in activities that give back to the community and can learn about the importance of community service.
