Indianapolis residents are invited to the launch of Reels & Roots, a cultural storytelling initiative designed to spark connection, reflection and dialogue through the power of film.
The inaugural event will feature a special screening of “To Live and Die and Live”, a critically acclaimed Sundance film by director Qasim Basir, followed by a live Q&A with the filmmaker.
Basir, known for films such as “Mooz-lum” and “A Boy. A Girl. A Dream.”, brings a deeply personal narrative to life in “To Live and Die and Live.” The film tells the story of a Hollywood director who returns to his hometown of Detroit to bury his stepfather. Through this journey, Basir examines themes of grief, addiction and identity, providing a raw and emotional look at the struggles and triumphs of life.

The event will be from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday, June 29, 2025, at the Phoenix Theatre Cultural Centre at 705 N. Illinois St. The program is free and open to the public, but RSVPs are required. Optional donations collected during the event will benefit PACE (Public Advocates in Community Re-Entry) and Mumineen Community Development Corporation, organizations that provide reentry support to justice-involved individuals.
Following the screening, Basir will join attendees for a live Q&A moderated by Dr. Russell J. Ledet, co-founder of Reels & Roots. The discussion will delve into Basir’s creative process, the themes of his work and the role of storytelling in fostering community healing.

Reels & Roots aims to use film as a medium to bring people together, encouraging critical conversations about shared experiences and societal challenges. This event represents a unique opportunity for Indianapolis residents to engage with thought-provoking cinema and explore topics such as healing, grief and justice reform.
