Sybrina Fulton, mother of Trayvon Martin, will deliver the keynote address at Indianapolis Public Library’s (IndyPL) Fall Fest on Nov. 20.
The event, held in Central Library’s Clowes Auditorium, will feature poets, dancers and performers throughout the day. Organizers expect Fulton to speak around 1 p.m. The annual event, started by the African American History Committee of the Indianapolis Public Library, has been held at the library since the 1980s. This year’s theme is “Dream Big/#staywoke/Change.”
The event will feature spoken word artists in grades 7-12 in the “Slammin’ Rhymes Challenge XV.”
Fulton, who co-wrote “Rest in Power: The Enduring Life of Trayvon Martin,” got involved after the chair of the African American History Committee reached out and shared the history of the event with her. The death of Fulton’s son, Trayvon Martin, in 2012 in Florida sparked nationwide outrage. His killer, George Zimmerman, was found not guilty due to Florida’s Stand Your Ground law.
“Her keynote will tie into our theme this year,” organizer Kimberly Brown-Harden said. “She’ll address the changes that we’ve gone through as a country and how to maintain a level of consciousness.”
Fall Fest will be noon-4 p.m. Nov. 20 in Clowe’s Auditorium at Central Library, 40 E. St. Clair St.
