Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton has been making splashes on a local and national level over the past month. Haliburton was named part of the 2023 USA Basketball Men’s National Team, which will compete at the 2023 FIBA Men’s World Cup in Manila, Philippines. Haliburton then signed a supermax deal with the Indiana Pacers on July 6.
A 23-year-old rising star in the NBA, Haliburton is one of 12 players chosen for the FIBA Menās World Cup Team. He joins a squad that includes several other young stars, such as Paolo Banchero (Orlando Magic), Jalen Brunson (New York Knicks) and Anthony Edwards (Minnesota Timberwolves).
Haliburton is no stranger to global competition. He won gold at the 2019 FIBA U19 Men’s World Cup and was part of the all-tournament team. He also suited up for the 2021 USA Select Team, which worked alongside the 2021 USA Men’s National Team before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The 2023 FIBA Men’s World Cup will be held from Aug. 25-Sept. 10 in Manila, Philippines. The United States is the defending champion and has won the tournament five times.
Haliburton is excited to represent his country on the world stage. “This is an incredible honor,” he said. “I’m looking forward to playing with some of the best players in the world and helping Team USA bring home another gold medal.”
Haliburton became the highest-paid player in the Pacer’s history when he inked a five-year deal worth $260 million.
Before the signing, Reggie Miller remained the highest-paid Pacer for nearly 23 years. When adjusted for inflation, Miller made approximately $180 million over the course of his 16-year career.
Tyrese Haliburton will earn $180 million by the fourth year of his new deal.
In the final year of his rookie deal, Haliburton will earn $5.8 million. His new contract goes into effect at the beginning of the 2024-25 season. Haliburton will earn $35.5 million for the season.
During a press conference at Gainbridge Fieldhouse July 6, Haliburton expressed his gratitude and excitement for the future after officially signing the contract.
“The Pacers have taken a chance on me, so the only way for me to reciprocate that love is to be invested in this community, be invested in this organization, be invested in the fans and that’s what I’ve done,” Haliburton said.
“This is where I want to be moving forward.”
