The No. 6 Notre Dame Fighting Irish travel to California to face the No. 3 University of Southern California (USC) Trojans in a highly anticipated clash Nov. 23.
This matchup features two of the biggest women’s college basketball names this season: Notre Dame’s Hannah Hidalgo and USC’s Juju Watkins.
Both teams come into the game riding strong early-season performances, earning a ranking. The matchup looks to build momentum early in the season.
Hidalgo, the Fighting Irish’s dynamic point guard, became a standout player in her sophomore season. Known for her relentless energy, precise passing and ability to score from anywhere on the court, Hidalgo leads a Notre Dame squad that blends young talent with veteran leadership.
Per ESPN, Hidalgo averages 25 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists per contest. She continues her defensive mastery this season, averaging an exceptional 5.3 steals per game.
On the other side of the hardwood, Watkins continues to live up to the high expectations that followed her decorated high school career. Now a sophomore for the Trojans, Watkins emerged as a dominant force with her ability to attack the rim, knock down perimeter shots and create mismatches for defenders.
According to ESPN, Watkins averages 21.5 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.8 assists. Her defense significantly improved, averaging 3.8 steals and three blocks per contest.
The Trojans’ home-court advantage at the Galen Center adds an extra layer of intrigue. USC’s energetic fan base has proven to be a factor in tight games, and the Fighting Irish must stay composed in an antagonistic environment.
Both teams excel in transition play and bring robust defensive schemes, setting the stage for a fast-paced contest. As Notre Dame seeks to assert itself as a national contender and USC looks to solidify its growing reputation under Gottlieb, this matchup is expected to glimpse the future of women’s college basketball.
Many fans believe that Hildago and Watkins, along with University of Connecticut’s Paige Bueckers, are the future of women’s basketball. Only time will tell.
Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. PT/10 p.m. ET.
