Health by Design, in collaboration with the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI), is enhancing its Indiana Road to Zero Academy (IRTZA) by offering regional workshops aimed at reducing traffic crashes and fatalities across Indiana.

Launched in 2022, IRTZA focuses on equipping transportation professionals, engineers, planners and safety advocates with strategies rooted in Safe System and Vision Zero principles. The 2025 program, funded by ICJI’s Traffic Safety Improvement Program, includes two in-person workshops in northern and southern Indiana scheduled for mid to late September. Participants will engage in hands-on activities to address the core components of traffic safety: safe roads, safe speeds and safe road users. Designed for municipal staff and community leaders, the workshops aim to foster a culture of safety within local governments and public works departments.

In addition to the workshops, Health by Design is launching a statewide Vision Zero Working Group and providing customized crash analysis and technical assistance to areas with significant safety challenges. This comprehensive approach seeks to translate data into actionable strategies to prevent traffic-related injuries and deaths.
“Preventable crashes continue to devastate Indiana families and communities,” said Marc McAleavey, CEO of Health by Design. “This initiative helps local communities and practitioners translate data into action, advancing our shared goal of safer streets for everyone.”

Health by Design is seeking input to determine workshop locations. Community members interested in hosting or influencing workshop venues can share their suggestions through an online form. Details about workshop dates and registration will be announced later this year.
