Finding your dream job starts with you

More by this author

Finding your dream job in this economy may be rough, but it does make life a lot simpler and easier when it’s something you love.

The first step is deciding what you really want with your life. Do you want to settle down in a nine-to-five job, or one filled with adventure and spontaneity?

Research your options, talk to a career specialist and weigh all career options available given your experience and skills.

Internships and temporary jobs could be helpful for people who want to test the waters before jumping into a new career.

You may even find that your job or career may be perfect, but it’s missing something. Maybe a new position in the same company could do the trick.

“I had a client who worked for a big bank and made good money, but she wasn’t happy,” Tim Dugger, career coach and owner of Career Cafe LLC, said. “She talked to her boss and they changed her job responsibilities and now she loves it.”

He went on to say that people must know their strengths and what they can bring to the job and vise versa.

Sometimes it’s the little things that are holding people back in a big way. If you aren’t a leader, it would be hard to run a company or be a manager. Same goes if you are an outgoing adventurous person, an office job may not be for you.

If new skills are needed, consider going to school, getting your master’s degree or get additional training.

Motivation can be tricky and many people consider getting a mentor. Contact people in the field, create a list of people who seem to be good fits and go with it.

All in all, when finding your dream job, get out there and shoot for the stars.
