Authorities say a gunman opened fire at a wedding reception in Indianapolis, shooting a 2-year-old girl in the head, because he wanted to show how tough he was.
Marion County prosecutors charged 21-year-old Francisco Ponce on Wednesday with felony aggravated battery and other counts.
Prosecutor’s office spokesman Mario Massillamany says an attempted murder charge was dropped because it didn’t appear Ponce intended to kill anyone.
Police say Ponce fired three shots into the crowd at the Saturday night reception, striking Yuridia Sosa in the head and hitting two women in the legs. The child was listed in critical but stable condition Wednesday at Methodist Hospital.
Massillamany says Ponce is an illegal Mexican immigrant and prosecutors will try to have him deported.
