Unemployed residents claim lack of job opportunities in state

Central Indiana is home to many unemployed residents who claim there is a lack of job opportunities in the state. Business professionals across the state that have been laid off are attending job fairs more than ever, with the hope of possibly landing a new job.

National Career Fairs, who hosts job fairs in Indianapolis has helped hundreds of residents find career placement. They also insist that career fairs are the best opportunity to make connections with recruiters face to face.

Jeremy Farries, who has been a part of the unemployed population for almost a year, admits it is hard to find a job with all the competition.

“I have experience in retail and sales, but the competition is getting heavier with older people now loosing their jobs and benefits, and there are now those workers who have a college degree looking for a job,” said Farries.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. monthly job losses in May slowed to 345,000 fewer than economists’ expected, but still residents are in a dire need of jobs.

Companies are teaming up with several different job fairs to help potential employees find job placement, but many still don’t know the steps to follow when looking for a job.

Although persistency is the key when looking for employment, National Career Fairs also suggests a confident and positive attitude when attending job fairs.

John Pitre, CEO of Starchware Solutions is looking to place a manufacturing facility in Indianapolis. His reasons for wanting to place a factory in the city is partly due to its easy access coast to coast within an eight-hour travel period to ship products.

“Depending on the size of the facility, we are looking to fill up to 1,500 positions,” said Pitre.

Pitre also said his company is looking to locate in Indianapolis because of the high number of unemployed engineers. He wants to get the local talent who has earned their degrees a chance to work.

Starchware Solutions plan to spread the word about job openings through job fairs and major churches. Also, the company will team up with technical colleges throughout Indianapolis as well to recruit engineers and workers.
