Women’s ministry expands its outreach

More by this author

The Scriptures describe the “daughters of Sara” as those women who do what is right without fear or hesitation.

In the case of the Daughters of Sara Ministries, an acronym meaning Sweet, Appointed, Righteous, and Anointed, no title could be more fitting.

What began as a small group of friends almost 20 years ago has grown to become a living example of Christian love and benevolence in the community.

The group originally started as a private prayer and study group of three friends who were all married to military service members. Eventually the word spread and the group began to grow.

Founder Pamela Wise said that the title, which comes from 1 Peter 3:6, came to her while praying in her den one afternoon. Soon thereafter, they began to formalize and focus their efforts on bettering the situations of those in need.

“Doing something in the community to touch the lives of women is what we’ve always done.” said Wise.

The Daughters, which became a 501(c) (3) entity in 2005, have participated in several community outreach ventures including a baby shower for single mothers called Showers of Blessing, which featured a child care supply giveaway. The women have also spent time serving in transitional homes and shelters as well as outreach involving the homeless population.

Recently, the ministry has begun setting its sights on business ownership to fund their charitable initiatives. The business, Sara’s Closet, is a thrift store specializing in high-quality women’s apparel and accessories. “Women love to thrift and they love to shop!” said Wise. “I just don’t like being stuck. There is so much we can do and there are so many ways to make a difference in somebody’s life.”

Currently, the women are on the hunt for a location to house Sara’s Closet but are accepting donations in the form of clothing. They plan to host fashion shows and yard sales to help cover the majority of their initial start-up costs.

The Daughters are also accepting new participants and women interested in joining the organization. They currently meet at a designated location every second Saturday of the month from March through August where they have discussions and workshops on various ministry related topics. In addition to community outreach, the group also has programs for women of all walks of life.

S3 or “Single Saved and Seasoned,” is a ministry focused on encouraging women who are unmarried and seeking to become “whole and holy instruments of God.”

Teens Dream is the group’s mentorship program designed to partner teen girls with mentors in their desired fields of work and study.

“Our motto is ‘Bringing people closer to God,’ – that is our focus.” said Wise. “It doesn’t matter who you are, we truly believe everyone can be closer to God.”
