Annual MID-TAC Championship is one for all ages

When you think of the challenge that the game of tennis represents, it is not uncommon to envision it as a game for the younger generation.

I suggest you do not tell that to the number of great players over 50 years of age who will compete in the 55th annual Midwestern Tennis Association’s Open Championship (MID-TAC) which will be conducted this weekend at North Central High School, Carmel High School, Five Seasons Sports Club and the Carmel Racquet Club.

More than 300 participants ranging from ages 8 to 70 (Yes, I said 70) will comprise the entry list that includes competitors from 25 states.

The action begins on July 2, and will once again be hosted by the Capital City Tennis Club here in Indianapolis. The club has hosted the event for 30 years and expects this year to feature some great competition.

“We are excited to welcome this great event back to our community,” said club President Frank Morton. “It will once again showcase the talent and commitment of the participants while entertaining the fans.”

Morton, who did not pick up the game of tennis until his basketball career ended at age 30, predicts a number of close matches due to the tremendously talented field that will converge on the city this weekend.

There is no admission charge and parking will also be free for those in attendance.

MID-TAC, which believes tennis can be used as a method to develop character and promote good sportsmanship, also awards scholarships for both academic and performance accomplishments to deserving junior players.

Those of you interested in tennis lessons can contact Frank Morton and James Garner of the Capital City Tennis Club at (317) 925-7313.
