What we accomplished together in 2014

More by this author

Over the last year, I have been honored and humbled by the level of support I have received from my fellow Hoosiers as I work to represent you in Congress. My friends and neighbors from across the political spectrum have spoken up about their concerns, offered feedback, and helped me to be a stronger voice on the issues that matter most to our community.

The input I receive as I travel the district gives me invaluable insight into the challenges facing Hoosiers and the opportunities we have to make our country a better place. Here are a few highlights of what we have accomplished together in 2014:

  • Secured over $27 million in grants for Indiana’s 7th Congressional District. These grants fund everything from childhood nutrition to infrastructure development. They put people to work and help make our community a better place to raise a family.
  • Resolved over 850 constituent cases for constituents living in Indiana’s 7th Congressional District. Whether Hoosiers are having trouble securing Social Security, veterans benefits or are looking for information on job training programs, my office is always here to help.
  • Connected over 1,200 unemployed Hoosiers with hiring businesses through my fifth annual job fair. Our city is full of talented people looking for work and I look forward to helping them find it again next year.
  • Introduced four bills in the U.S. House of Representatives, including the Military Suicide Reduction Act, legislation to protect the mental health of deployed service members. This bill was recently signed into law by President Barack Obama.
  • Hosted a small business forum to help entrepreneurs understand the fundamentals of doing business with the federal government. Small businesses represent over 99 percent of all businesses, so our continued economic recovery relies on their success.
  • Connected Marion County youth with summer programs, internships and jobs through my Youth Opportunities Fair in May. This fair works to keep kids safe and off the street while providing valuable life experiences.

As we close out this year, I want to thank you again for trusting me to represent you in Washington. Moving forward into 2015, I will continue my fight to provide better education to our children, help small businesses create jobs, ensure our seniors have the support they need, and grow opportunities for the middle-class and those struggling to enter it. I want to wish you and your family a safe and happy holiday season.
