Indignation

More by this author

I appreciate the recent commentaries of Erika D. Smith and Dan Carpenter in the Indianapolis Star regarding the indignation of some over Congressman André Carson’s recent remarks.

If you wouldn’t like to see “Black Americans hanging on a tree,” he probably wasn’t talking to you or about you.

Since Barack Obama was inaugurated as the 44th president of the USA, this not-so-new phenomenon now known as the tea party has been on a rant.

Here are some examples:

How many times have we’ve heard the lame lament that your country has gone somewhere from which it needs to be retrieved. “We’re taking our country back.” Where did it go and from whom are you taking it back?

“The national debt is too high” – But those huge tax cuts for the corporate and millionaire crowd are sacrosanct.

“Our taxes are too high.” – Payroll and income taxes are currently lower across the board than they’ve been in at least 10 years.

“The president brought us Obamacare.” – Guess what, he actually campaigned on a promise to pass a universal health care bill and ended up signing off on only a watered-down version of what many of his supporters anticipated.

“Obama wants to take our guns.” – There are now even more laws which allow you to “holster up” in state parks; the parking lot of your employer or the local grocery store and God only knows where else. Not to mention, displaying your hardware within yards of where this president is appearing.

I can’t begin to list all the derogatory terms I’ve heard visited upon not only the president himself but even his wife and children. From the unprecedented screaming of “You lie” at the president in his State of the Union Address to taking offense that, as president, he is presumptuous enough to speak to school children, the disrespect and hatred toward this president is well documented.

But hey, you are an American; you have the right to say whatever you please. I just want to know, what you’re so mad about. At every turn there are obstructions and outright misrepresentations about this president and his aims.

The president has bent over backwards to appease your indignation and anger. I hardly recognize the man that I worked to get elected and proudly voted for; and you’re mad! Really?
