Christian Theological Seminary will bring Dr. Frank Anthony Thomas from Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) to preach in its chapel and offer a workshop on preaching on Nov. 1.
Preaching as a celebration of life in relationship with God is at the heart of the vocation of Dr. Thomas. His life mission is to preach and teach the Gospel of Jesus Christ in creative and relevant sermonic forms to offer people hope for life (Hebrews 6:19).
The workshop will explore:
• The distinct perspective and genius the African-American church has brought to the preaching task.
• The role of celebration in the African-American pulpit.
Dr. Thomas will also preach for the 1 p.m. chapel service, which can be attended separately from the workshop and is free and open to the public.
The workshop will run from 9 a.m. to noon and from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Registration is at 8:30 a.m.
Dr. Thomas is the senior pastor of his church in Memphis. He also teaches preaching at McCormick and North Park seminaries and has been a co-mentor in the D.Min. program at United in Dayton, Ohio.
Some of his books are They Like to Never Quit Praisin’ God: The Role of Celebration in Preaching, What’s Love Got to Do With It? Love, Power, Sex, and God, and Spiritual Maturity: Preserving Congregational Health and Balance.
His most recent book is The Lord’s Prayer in Times Such as These, with Sept. 11, 2001, as its central focus.
Thomas is in demand as a preacher, speaker, lecturer and revivalist.
Cost for the workshop is $25 or $35 with lunch included. It will be held in Room B-29 at CTS.
