New charity bike ride honors late Ind. trooper

More by this author

A recreational bicycle ride to honor an Indiana state trooper killed while biking will help provide scholarships to the children of police officers killed in the line of duty.

The initial “Gary’s Ride” will be held Aug. 22 on the third anniversary of the death of state police Lt. Gary Dudley and former Lake County Police Chief Gary Martin. They were killed in 2006 while on a charity ride when a collision between two trucks sent one of the vehicles into them on Indiana 63 in Vermillion County.

The new ride will originate from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in the western Indianapolis suburb of Plainfield. Routes will range from just a few miles to up to 100 miles.
