Indianapolis —- Mosaic City and Big Car have teamed up to focus energies into boosting the amenities and appeal of the Indiana Avenue Cultural District. A district known for its historic Indiana Avenue, this area is ripe for a new take on its identity. Large anchor organizations like the Madame Walker Theatre Center, IUPUI and the Stutz building make up this district as well as smaller merchants like Bourbon Street Distillery, Mojoes Coffee and the Indianapolis School of Ballet.
Indiana Avenue anchors the district that stretches from the Central Canal to the White River. This diagonal gateway to Downtown is home to the IUPUI campus, the cityās life sciences initiative and a collection of major medical campuses. Indiana Avenue was the place for jazz. Keeping that tradition alive, the community hosts festivals and performances throughout the year and showcases jazz-themed outdoor art.
Mosaic City and Big Car will work with the community to create a digital directory of the area and identify ways to better connect those working and living within the district. With support from the Central Indiana Community Foundation, the two creative organizations will consider the potential for an Indiana Avenue public meeting space, initiate plans for a 2nd annual Indiana Avenue Street Festival, and will work to get public art restored to the Avenue.
Mosaic City is an organization founded in Indianapolis with a mission is to build culturally savvy cities. We connect and engage audiences. We provide customized, safe and creative inclusion opportunities. We work under the premise that if everyone is more connected, weāll be more familiar. And when weāre more familiar there is less room for disrespect or fear and more room for growth, equity and better cities via better people.
Big Car brings art to people and people to art, sparking creativity in lives to transform communities. As an adaptive and flexible cultural organization, Big Car draws together people of all backgrounds to promote and perpetuate creativity, invigorate public places, and support better neighborhoods.
