Brad StevensExcellence in Sports Award

More by this author

Brad Sevens, head coach of the NCAA Men’s Basketball runner-up Butler Bulldogs, will receive this year’s Excellence in Sports Award from Indiana Black Expo.

Over the last three seasons, Stevens has compiled a record of 89 wins and 15 losses, giving him the record for most wins in the first three years as head coach in NCAA history. In his first season, Butler finished 30-4, making the then 31-year-old Stevens the third-youngest coach to ever achieve 30 wins. As many people are aware, his coaching brilliance and calm demeanor led a smart, but undersized Butler team to the NCAA championship game last April, where they were a couple of inches off of a half-court bank shot away from winning it all.

In addition to contributing to the Indiana sports world, Stevens also has made a positive impact on communities worldwide. He has been very active in the American Cancer Society since his wife Tracy’s mother died from the disease, most notably holding a fundraiser for the organization during last year’s tournament run. Additionally, he has volunteered at a charity benefiting children from the impoverished nation of Uganda. But IBE is honoring him is for his ability to lead and build character in his young players.

“Coach Stevens has an incredible track record for winning as well as a love for both his players and the game of basketball,” noted Tanya Bell, IBE’s president and CEO.
