Just because you have decided to ditch fried food doesn’t mean you have to abandon flavor. Happy Chicken, a Castleton-area restaurant that recently opened a new location downtown at 130 N. Delaware St., is serving up tasty baked wings, along with green beans, potatoes and more.
Happy Chicken prides itself on being “the best healthy baked chicken in Indianapolis.” Because they use a dry rub to flavor the chicken, the meat is gluten-free for those who may have food allergies. Though I was inspired by a Groupon promotion to visit Happy Chicken in the past, I didn’t realize the full scale of what was available at the small, unseeming eatery until I found myself back again last week. I was blown away by all of the options available beyond their signature spicy baked chicken, and I couldn’t resist trying some of them out.
I explored a menu full of shrimp, flatbread, fish and taco options. My favorite dish was the chicken bowl. It consisted of chicken breast, yellow rice, fresh lettuce, pita bread and Mediterranean tzatziki sauce for only $6.99. A close second was the Flavor Cajun Tilapia. I don’t know where I could find an equally yummy seafood dish for only $9.99.
Of course, I can’t write a review without mentioning the chicken. The meat is tender, spicy and delicious. Its flavor somewhat reminds me of jerk chicken that you might find on the island of Jamaica. Their family meals make ordering bulk wings an economical option, but if you are seeking to treat yourself rather than provide sustenance for a large party, I recommend being adventurous and trying something new. Trust me, you will be happy that you did.
