Charles Williams helped make history at Northern New Mexico College (NNMC) this past year. As a member of the first men’s collegiate basketball team in the school’s 100-year history, he set the standard for all to follow.
“The season was a learning season for us all,” he said, “but from the beginning of the season to the end of the season we improved tremendously.” Charles played in all 16 games of the Eagles first season averaging 10 points a game.
Off the court Charles scored more important numbers by attaining a 3.5 grade point average and being one of only seven student/athletes nationally to be named to the United States College Athletic Association’s (USCAA) All-American team. He becomes the very first NNMC student-athlete ever named to post season honors in the school’s history.
Coming to New Mexico from Indianapolis, Ind. required a slight adjustment for Charles.
“It was culture shock,” he says, “the language, the food, the music was all different, but the people out here are more friendly.”
Charles wants to graduate and return home, to help revitalize a non-profit agency his late father established and oversaw. His ultimate goal is to have his own business, hopefully one working with children.
