Beau Bayh won the Indiana Secretary of State election on Nov. 3, defeating Republican Max Engling, Lincoln Party candidate Greg Ballard and Libertarian Lauri Shillings. Bayh is the first Democrat to win a statewide election in Indiana since 2012.
“A huge congratulations to Beau Bayh on this monumental achievement. Hoosiers have spoken tonight in massive numbers in this historic election,” Indiana Democratic Party Chair Karen Tallian said in a statement. “They said they are done with the corruption at the Statehouse and with the failures of 20-plus years of one-party Republican rule. Over the last year-plus, our county parties, local parties, and volunteers have organized across the state to make this result possible. Beau visited all 92 counties, connecting with voters in every part of this state. This result shows Hoosiers are ready for change. Beau will deliver on his promises to root out corruption, audit this office from day one, support legislation for citizen-led ballot initiatives, and make the Secretary of State’s office work for every Hoosier again. We are very excited to see him take office.”
According to a press release from the Indiana Democratic Party, Bayh ran a campaign focused on returning the Secretary of State’s office back to the people following the tenure of Diego Morales and Indiana Republicans. Bayh’s priority as Secretary of State will be starting an independent audit of the office to give answers to Hoosier taxpayers.
According to a press release, Indiana Democrats organized alongside Bayh’s campaign throughout the cycle, knocking on more than 60,000 doors, and helping more than 250,000 people vote early.
