RICHMOND, Ind. (AP) _ Wayne County residents concerned about a proposed wheel tax say the county needs to look at its own spending before increasing taxes.
County commissioners have suggested a Local Option Highway User Tax to close a $1.15 million shortfall in the county’s highway budget and pay to repair and pave streets throughout the county. The proposed tax would collect $25 per car or small truck from residents and businesses throughout the county and $40 for bigger vehicles.
Officials say the county would receive more than $990,000 a year from the tax. That money would be used to repair the county’s 722 miles of road. The city of Richmond would receive $840,200 a year.
Richmond City Councilman Phil Quinn tells the Palladium-Item the county needs to do more to cut expenses first.
