The Rev. E.L. Porter, pastor of Greater Galilee Missionary Baptist Church and a Hurricane Katrina survivor, will serve as the host pastor of a community service of remembrance and hope concerning Hurricane Katrina and the 2008 Indiana flood and wind disaster.
The event will be sponsored by The Church Federation of Greater Indianapolis.
Pastor Porter was one of over 2,000 families and friends that arrived in Greater Indianapolis after one of the worst natural disasters in the U.S. – Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
The service is open to the public and will be held at Greater Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, 4375 N. Arlington, at 7 p.m., Aug. 29. Hurricane Katrina happened on the same date in 2005.
Pastor Porter has written that āThe story of my being in Indianapolis is far too much to tell⦠It is a story that will be remembered for the rest of my life and should be shared with readers around the world about how God saved and delivered my family. But now I just want to give thanks to those in Indianapolis and the state of Indiana who were there for us.ā
The Church Federation played a key role in working with the faith community, government and private sector in the resettling of families in Greater Indianapolis in 2005. With the expected arrival of Hurricane Rita and the devastation from Hurricane Katrina in 2005, The Church Federation, in cooperation with the Interfaith Ministries of Greater Houston, sent two workers to Houston to work with families affected by the hurricanes.
Rev. Patricia Case, a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) minister, worked with the Communications Department of the Disaster Responsiveness and Rev. Bruce Naylor worked with the Congregational Support of Disaster Responsiveness.
