The costumes, candy, parties and laughter all make Halloween one of the highlights of the year. However, as with July 4, it’s important that safety is a priority.
Dr. James Mowry, director of the Indiana Poison Center, offers the following tips to make sure Halloween continues to be a favorite time of the year.
Feed children before going trick or treating
This will reduce their urge to snack on the candy they collect. Consider giving nonedible treats to children who visit your home. Also, be sure to give out age appropriate treats since young children can easily choke on small objects.
Costumes should be nonflammable
The costumes should also be warm and appropriate length to avoid trips and falls. Masks should fit properly and have large eyeholes to improve breathing and vision.
Use make up instead of masks
This will allow unobstructed vision. Read labels to make sure that face paints and makeup is non-toxic. If makeup is swallowed, treatment depends on the amount eaten, ingredients and symptoms.
Carefully check all candy
Only eat treats that are in their original unopened wrappers. Throw away any candy in wrappers that are faded, have holes or tears, or signs of re-wrapping.
Pumpkin carving
Children can draw a face on a pumpkin or scrape out the contents but an adult should do the actual carving. Roasted pumpkin seeds are a tasty treat, but don’t forget they can also be a choking hazard for young children.
