It gives me great pleasure to publically acknowledge the Honorable André Carson’s stellar support of Martin University. The fruit of his assistance to Martin University’s student body, faculty, staff and alumni has been exceedingly substantial.
Earlier this year, Congressman Carson proactively supported Martin University’s application for designation as a predominantly Black institution (PBI). This action bolstered Martin University’s efforts in receiving a federal PBI grant in the amount of $1.25 million over the course of the next five years. The university will receive its first installment of the PBI grant of $250,000 early this month.
The PBI grant will allow Martin University to develop, implement and maintain online/distance learning programming. The specific goals of the new online/distance learning program are to:
• Increase the university’s IT infrastructure capacity to offer distance learning courses.
• Increase faculty competency in designing and implementing online courses.
• Develop a range of courses that can be implemented online in a variety of formats.
• Increase the university’s electronic media/resources.
• Increase student online support services.
• Increase the university’s student enrollment, retention, and graduation rates.
Prior to receiving the PBI grant, the university did not offer such programming. As a result of Congressman Carson’s support, Martin University will continue to offer low-income and minority students an opportunity to receive an outstanding education that will enhance opportunity while better serving the Indianapolis community.
Please know that we at Martin University are exceedingly grateful for Congressman Carson’s support.
