Damien Geter is a man of many talents, such as playing multiple instruments, however he lends his deep, baritone voice to the American Spiritual Ensemble, composed of the best classical singers of the world.
“We’re not a gospel choir. We travel the country and keep the Negro spiritual alive,” said the Virginia native.
The ensemble is heading to Spain this summer. Before going on tour, Geter and his fellow ensemble members travel to Lexington, Ky., to rehearse.
Geter is a valued member of the prestigious American Spiritual Ensemble but is also a faculty member of University High School if Indiana in Carmel where he serves as the music, fine and performing arts instructor.
“I always loved music and wanted to be a teacher, but I didn’t know it was going to be like this. I thought I was going to come in, play the right notes and leave,” said Geter. “It’s not just work – it became a big part of my life.”
When he’s not teaching, you can find him singing in the opera “The Mikado” in Indiana’s Hendricks County, in Cincinnati singing ensemble for “Porgy and Bess,” or practicing his technique.
The graduate of Indiana State University’s performance master’s degree program is also the bass section leader/soloist at Tabernacle Presbyterian Church. Furthermore, he can be heard on Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra violist Terry Landon’s children’s book, Little Cloud.
