Amidst bitter cold temperatures this month, Citizens Energy Group has delivered the highest amount of natural gas to customers in a decade, and with increased consumption comes the expectation of higher bills.
“Temperatures this January have been nearly 25 percent colder than last January, making it the coldest January in Indianapolis since 2004. With such cold weather, customers should expect higher bills due primarily to higher natural gas usage,” said Mike Strohl, Vice President, Customer Relationships and Corporate Affairs.
In January of 2013, when weather was slightly warmer than normal, the average Citizens customer used about 158 therms of gas and their bill was about $132. During this very cold January, the average Citizens customer used about 205 therms and their bill was about $178.
Bills this January also are impacted by slightly higher natural gas prices compared to last January. The price of natural gas on the New York Mercantile Exchange this month, however, is 51 percent lower than it was in January 2008. Increased natural gas production in the U.S. has kept natural gas prices low.
In light of the higher bills this year, Citizens is again prepared to help customers in need. Customers are asked to call at 924-3311 if they are having difficulty making their payment or are behind on their account. Customers may also qualify for flexible payments arrangements or assistance through our Warm Heart Warm Home Foundation.
During January’s very cold weather, Citizens’ gas system has proved reliable by delivering 9.4 billion cubic feet of natural gas, 26 percent more gas than last January and the highest volume since 2004.
“Thanks to prudent investments in our pipeline infrastructure and careful supply planning, the Citizens gas system again provided natural gas to our customers when they needed it most,” said Strohl.
