Judge extends ex-DC mayor Barry’s probation

More by this author

A federal judge has decided to extend former Mayor Marion Barry’s probation for tax offenses by two years.

In a ruling Friday, U.S. District Judge Deborah Robinson denied the government’s request to revoke his probation. Robinson also refused to impose a curfew or other restrictions.

Federal prosecutors say Barry failed to file his 2007 tax returns and violated his probation for previous tax offenses.

Prosecutors first asked that Barry be sent to jail, but at a hearing last month they dropped that request because of his health problems. Instead, they suggested his probation be extended with conditions such as electronic monitoring.

Barry has said he’s filed and paid his tax returns for 2008, and continues to pay back past amounts on his tax bill.
