Vice President Joe Biden dropped in unexpectedly on a Denver barbecue restaurant Tuesday after presiding over a town hall meeting on green jobs and the economy.
Patrons of M&D’s Cafe east of downtown broke into applause when Biden walked in. The vice president shook hands and posed for photos.
Phyllis M. Taylor of South Bend, Ind., called her husband, Hayes, to tell him Biden was in the restaurant. Biden took the phone from her and spoke to Hayes.
“He (Biden) told him that he was here having lunch with his wife and that she was a beautiful woman,” said Taylor, who was in town for a Church of God in Christ women’s convention.
M&D’s owner Mack Shead hovered nearby as waiters brought out plates of barbecued catfish, fried green tomatoes, corn bread and glasses of lemonade.
Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., accompanied Biden.
Biden presided over a meeting of President Barack Obama’s Middle Class Task Force in Denver earlier Tuesday. He is delivering the commencement address at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs on Wednesday.
