Get up and groove during National Dance Day!

More by this author

Did you know that National Dance Day is July 25? The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is celebrating with a groove!

Visitors can celebrate National Dance Day at the museum on July 25 by learning official Dance Day choreography, meeting “So You Think You Can Dance” star Valerie Rockey, and watching performances by talented Indianapolis dancers.

National Dance Day at the museum has something for every dancer, from coordinated to clumsy! Dance Day visitors will have the opportunity to participate in a group dance class to learn the official National Dance Day choreography at 12 p.m. Participants will then show off their new movies in a mass performance to the popular song “Shut Up and Dance” by Walk the Moon. The dance will be recorded and submitted to “So You Think You Can Dance.”

Families and children will also have the chance to meet Valerie Rockey, an Indianapolis native seen on “So You Think You Can Dance,” at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Rockey will perform solo at 12 p.m. and then participate in the group dance class to learn the National Dance Day choreography.

Special performances will take place between 11:30 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. from dancers around the city. Performing organizations will include Kathak North Indian Classical Dance Academy, Irish Dancers of Indianapolis, Latin Expressions, IN Motion from Indiana University, Indiana Ballet Conservatory, Alter Ego Hip Hop Dance Crew, and Dance Kaleidoscope.

National Dance Day was launched in 2010 to encourage Americans to embrace dance as a fun and positive way to maintain good health and fight obesity. The day is an opportunity for everyone around the country to get up, celebrate dance, and have fun doing it!
