Ask the IU Health expert Skin cancer doesn’t discriminate: All ages, skin types at risk

Despite warnings to stay out of the sun and to wear sunscreen, a recent study published in the journal JAMA Dermatology shows that Americans are being diagnosed with melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, more now than ever before.

In 2016, approximately 76,000 Americans were diagnosed with melanoma. Why are we seeing such a spike in melanoma cases, and who is at risk for the deadly disease? Read on for answers to some common questions.

Why are we seeing such an increase in skin cancer?

We are spending more time outdoors and covering less of our skin. While in the past we saw everyone in long sleeves, pants and a hat while out in the sun, that is not the case today.

Who is susceptible to skin cancer?

In the past, most cases were in people ages 50 and older. However, that has changed in recent years. The disease can affect children, teenagers and young adults. No one is immune to skin cancer.

Additionally, all skin types are vulnerable to skin cancer. Darker skin is less susceptible to skin cancer due to greater amounts of melanin, but it is still important to wear sunscreen and be aware of new or unusual spots on the skin.

What are the warning signs of skin cancer?

Knowing the ABCDEs of skin cancer can aid in early detection. Those letters stand for asymmetry, border irregularity, colors (as in more than one), diameter greater than 6 mm and evolving (change in size, shape or color).

Who needs to wear sunscreen and when?

People of all ages and skin types should wear sunscreen, any and all times they are in the sun (not just while on vacation!).
