Today, Bryant Scott is a successful gospel record label executive, the husband of Ta’Sha Marie Scott and father to six daughters. It’s fair to say that Scott has achieved much success, but what is more important to him is how he has said yes to God with his life.
Growing up, attending church was the law of the household. His father, Bishop Leonard Scott, currently the pastor of Rock Community Church in Indianapolis, was an associate minister at Christ Church Apostolic under Bishop James E. Tyson and kept his family involved in church.
“Both mom and dad were in the choir, on the praise team – they had various functions at the church. We weren’t there every day of the week, but it seemed like it,” laughed Bryant Scott, executive vice president of Tyscot Records.
All of Bishop Scott’s “rules” paid off because in his 20s, Bryant Scott appreciated his Christian foundation and God became real to him. After much prayer and fasting, the younger Scott listened as God called on him to become an apprentice to his father and learn the gospel record company business. He even declined going to dental school in order to fulfill God’s will for his life.
“The company was a hobby for my dad. When I interned, I don’t think we even did $50,000 a year in sales. By 1991, we were doing about $3 million in sales. God performed a lot of miracles,” said Scott. He attributes Tyscot’s growth to being favored by God, personal relationship with artists, and signing artists who are serious about their life’s journey as believers in Christ.
Today, Tyscot’s roster includes talent such as Deitrick Haddon and his wife Damita; the Rance Allen Group; The Anointed Pace Sisters; Harold Rayford; Ann Nesby; Darwin Hobbs and Shirley Murdock, among other big names.
Although Scott was doing the Lord’s work, he struggled to walk in his faith and procrastinated in saying “yes” to God with his life. He eventually got his act together and allowed the Lord to permeate in his life in astonishing ways.
“In church, you have your preaching part of the service and the music part of the service. God began dealing with me and I realized one is not more important than the other. Pure worship should be given before God,” Scott explained.
From there, Scott and his father decided to record “My Worship Experience,” a live recording of a service held at the Harmony Conference in Indianapolis that showcases music intermingled with preaching. During the service, Bryant Scott spontaneously gave his testimony on how he’s turned his life into constant worship.
“We say we’re sold out for Christ, but I think God rejects our ‘worship’ because we go throughout the week and put work first, our kids first, everything is first, then it’s ‘Oh, it’s Sunday morning. I got to get to church so I can worship.’ We’re giving him tainted worship because we’ve not practiced all week,” said Bryant.
“My Worship Experience,” which is a two-disc CD, also features selections from artists, such as Lucinda Moore, Deitrick Haddon and wife Damita, Lil Mo, The Indiana Celebration Mass Choir and even Scott’s dad, Bishop Scott.
“A lot of people aren’t familiar with a level of pure worship. To move into another level of worship where we want to connect with God takes more than just the traditional flow of a service. Worship is made possible by a relationship with God,” said A. Thomas Hill, senior pastor of Healing Streams Word and Worship Center on why Christians aren’t more like Bryant and are afraid to be vulnerable with God. Hill also lent his talent to “My Worship Experience.”
On the release, Hill sings “Oh that Man,” which is about how men do not deserve God’s love, grace and mercy, but how God delivers us out of our trouble. This song is also inspired by Psalm 107.
Hill remembers the awesome atmosphere when recording the live CD and recalls how each artist drew from his or her life’s experiences and let the Holy Spirit flow through their voices.
Minister Darrel Harris, who performs “The Heavens Declare Thy Glory,” also felt God’s presence during the recording and was humbled by all of the artists coming together for a common goal – glorifying God.
“Worship is obedience to God, not just to sing a song, rift and run and be obedient to what God has asked us to do,” said Harris.
Bryant Scott became transparent and learned how to surrender his life to Christ and hopes others make worship a lifestyle just as he has. He quotes Matthew 6:33 in helping believers get a head start in increasing their worship.
“This is a wonderful CD and experience of worship outside the stained glass windows. You can take the sanctuary anywhere you are and enter into worship with the Lord,” said Hill.
