Deputy Memorial
Sheriff Frank J. Anderson will dedicate a memorial on Sept. 11 that honors deputies who lost their lives while serving the Marion County Sheriff’s Department.
Joining Anderson at the announcement will be: Dawn Veirs, daughter of Depuy Floyd “Tommy” Settles; and Jerry Baker, father of Deputy Jason Baker.
Also in attendance will be Indianapolis Firefighters Ryan Feeney and Clyde Pennington, the artists who created the memorial. The memorial is a life-size bronze statue of a deputy saluting the American flag that is displayed daily in front of the MCSD headquarters.
The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the entrance to the Marion County Jail, 40 S. Alabama St.
‘Poor Walk’
The third annual “Friends of the Poor Walk” to benefit the needy individuals and families served by the all-volunteer Society of St. Vincent de Paul will be Sept. 25 at 2 p.m. on either a one-mile or three-mile route at Washington Park, 3130 E. 30th St.
Those interested in participating or pledging support for those who do walk are asked to visit www.svdpindy.org to register for the walk or to make a pledge.
education workshops
The Indianapolis Alliance of Black School Educators will host two workshops designed to “empower teachers and administrators” on Sept. 13 at Martin University from 6 to 8 p.m.
“We want to help educators and community center leaders reach students,” said Leroy Robinson, an organizer of the event and a teacher at Pike High School.
The first workshop, Glasser and Madeas Return to Our Schools, will be in Clare Hall, Room 128. The second, Empowering, Creating and Transforming Vibrant and Successful Learning Communities, will be in Marian Hall, Room 251.

Free health screenings
Wishard Health Services’ community health centers (Forest Manor, Grassy Creek and North Arlington health centers) as well as IPS School 83, CAFÉ (Community Alliance of the Far Eastside) and the Devington Communities Association will host a Community Day 2010 celebration on Sept. 18 at the Grassy Creek Health Center, 9443 E. 38th St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Free health screenings, immunizations, and family entertainment will be offered.
Screenings include asthma, cholesterol, glucose (diabetes), skin cancer, blood pressure, dental, body mass index, STD, HIV, sickle cell and vision. Free immunizations for children from 4 to16 years of age also will be offered. Parents must bring their child’s shot records.
