Parts of highway reopened after fiery crash

INDIANAPOLIS — State highway crews have reopened eastbound lanes of Interstate 465 after determining a bridge was safe despite being damaged last week when a propane tanker exploded underneath the Indianapolis expressway.

The state Department of Transportation opened two of the bridge’s three lanes to traffic late Sunday, keeping the left lane closed so that repair work can continue. The highway agency says tests found no structural damage to the bridge’s steel from Thursday’s crash and explosion.

Traffic is still not being allowed to use the ramp from southbound I-69 onto I-465 to the city’s east side while work is done to replace a concrete column knocked out by the crash.

Those repairs are expected to be done by midweek.
