‘Sincerely, Love’ reminds audiences what truly matters

“Love conquers all.”

That is the message Kenyettá Dance Company is trying to send in their most recent production “Sincerely, Love”; at least according to Ryan L. Bennett, stage manager with Kenyettá Dance Company.

Bennett says that over the past 11 years, Kenyettá Dance Company has utilized the stage to shed light on important topics such as promiscuity, violence, racism and homelessness. This December, Kenyettá Dance Company has decided to take on what they feel is the most important and timely topic of all: Love.

“With current police shootings, protests and a spike in hate crimes, America has lost its luster. The land of the free and home of the brave has been replaced with hatred and bigotry. The only way you can fight hate is with the complete opposite. We may not agree, but because of love, we can accept each other,” said Bennett.

Kenyettá Dance Company is a professional group specializing in contemporary dance. In addition to performances, the company offers workshops, classes and demonstrations to students of all ages and levels of experience.

“In the world of contemporary dance, Black dancers aren’t really seen, because there are a lot of stipulations that ballet dancers are supposed to uphold. You have to be thin and fair-skinned. Black women are not always naturally like that. We are a place where all dancers — regardless of color, shape and size — can learn, grow and display their art,” said Bennett.

Their style is inspired by South African ballet, the music of the 1970s and Christian spirituality. In this upcoming production, performers explore and celebrate the complexity of human relationships in all their forms.

“Each piece is a separate story regarding the true definition of love. One word doesn’t really describe love. We went back to the separate Greek meanings of love such as agape, eros, philia and storge. The show will leave you wanting to love each other unconditionally,” said Bennett.

Bennett has personal reasons he thinks people should see the show.

“Personally, I feel that when we read the Bible and talk about what love is, we see that love conquers all. With love, there cannot be hate, destruction or division. The more love we have, the better.”

“Sincerely, Love” will take place on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 7:30–9:30 p.m. at the Arthur M. Glick Jewish Community Center, 6701 Hoover Road. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children ages 12 and younger.
