The Indianapolis Public Library has announced the two finalists for its chief executive officer position.

Jackie Nytes, former associate director of the library and current member of the Indianapolis City-County Council, and Tom Sloan, associate executive director of Reaching Across Illinois Library System, have made it through several rounds of the interview process and have emerged as the top two candidates.

“We are obviously experiencing a watershed moment for our library system,” stated Tom Shevlot, president of The Indianapolis Public Library Board. “We believe we’ve found two finalists who have the experience and the energy to make our libraries an even more integral part of the community.”

The search, conducted by Bradbury Associates, is expected to result in a new CEO by November. Before the final selection is announced, however, people will have a chance to question the candidates at a public forum on Sept. 14 at 6:30 p.m. at Central Library, 40 E. St. Clair St.

“These two finalists were the best of a very strong pool of candidates,” said Dan Bradbury, managing partner of Bradbury Associates. “It was one of the strongest collections of candidates I’ve seen, and that’s a testament to the national reputation of the Indianapolis Public Library system.”

The search committee began with 22 applicants, and then narrowed the field to seven, ultimately identifying Nytes and Sloan as the final candidates.

The Indianapolis Public Library operates 23 branches and has a budget of over $38 million. In recent years, the number of patrons has consistently topped the five million mark and visitors have logged over one million hours of computer time.
