For the ninth consecutive year, Ball State University has received a Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award for their commitment to diversity and inclusion.

The award is presented by INSIGHT Into Diversity, the oldest and largest diversity magazine and website in higher education.

The HEED award recognized U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate a commitment to diversity, inclusion, equity and belonging through their work. The application process is comprehensive and rigorous and requires a demonstration of “outstanding” commitment. The university was featured in the magazine’s November/December issue, along with the 113 other HEED award recipients.

“Ball State University is proud to be a diverse and inclusive education community where our students, faculty and staff are supported and welcomed,” said Charlene Alexander, chief strategy officer at Ball State. “We are honored to have earned this special recognition again.”

The application is open to any college or university across the U.S. and Canada and recognizes achievement through initiatives, programs, outreach, student recruitment, retention, completion and hiring practices for faculty and staff. Representatives from the publisher review and evaluate all the applications.

The university utilizes their Office of Inclusive Excellence as a key training and development resource for the Ball State campus community. Their work seeks to foster an inclusive environment “where individuals of diverse backgrounds know they are supported through advocacy efforts.”

“This recognition speaks to our campus culture and who we are as an institution,” said Rashida Willard, associate vice president of inclusive excellence at Ball State. “I am proud of our continued work toward inclusiveness.”

Additionally, Indiana University Bloomington and Indiana University Indianapolis also received the award.
