The City of Indianapolis has officially unveiled the inaugural Black Wealth Crawl, a first-of-its-kind retail week aimed at driving foot traffic, consumer spending and long-term economic mobility toward local Black-owned brick-and-mortar enterprises.
Announced by the city’s By Design initiative in partnership with the Indy Chamber and the Indy Black Chamber of Commerce, the 11-day campaign will run from Aug. 28 through Sept. 7. The community-driven initiative features 17 participating Black-owned businesses situated across various neighborhoods in the Indianapolis region.
To incentivize public participation, organizers have implemented an interactive raffle system. Each qualifying visit to a participating business during the crawl enters shoppers into a drawing, with selected winners receiving a $150 gift card intended to be reinvested into local small businesses.
“By Design exists to create intentional pathways so every person in our city can thrive,” Mayor Joe Hogsett said in a statement. “The Black Wealth Crawl is an opportunity for neighbors to participate in the efforts of By Design while supporting the businesses that help our communities flourish.”
The public campaign marks the first major activation to emerge directly from the city’s By Design Economic Empowerment Blueprint. The strategic roadmap outlines near-term, municipally led actions designed to advance Black wealth-building, expand access to capital and dismantle historic systemic barriers to economic opportunity across Marion County. The broader By Design initiative collaborates with the Cities for Financial Empowerment (CFE) Fund’s national CityStart program.
“The Black Wealth Crawl creates a meaningful opportunity for residents to support local entrepreneurs while contributing to a broader conversation about economic mobility, neighborhood investment, and inclusive growth,” Indy Chamber President & CEO Matt Mindrum said in a statement.
The initiative kicks off with a morning community celebration hosted by the Indy Black Chamber of Commerce on Aug. 28 from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., bringing together participating business owners, civic leaders, and corporate sponsors.
The crawl will formally conclude on Labor Day, Sept. 7, with a closing reception from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 1000 Words Gallery, located at 3328 East 10th Street, Suite C.
The final event will recognize participating vendors while highlighting Black entrepreneurship and local history through an interactive art activation.
