Robert Evans is Player of the Week

More by this author

After missing six weeks with a fractured ankle, Arsenal Technical High School senior quarterback Robert Evans returned to lead the Titans to their first sectional victory over a non-IPS school in 20 years.Ā

The Titans defeated Lawrence North 34-20 in the first round of the tournament. Quarterback Evans completed 11 of 17 passes for 292 yards and three touchdowns; he also rushed for 60 yards on four carries.

Games of the week:

Warren Central @ Arsenal Tech: The Warren Central Warriors have held the No. 1 spot in the state all season. They are heavy favorites to win but the Titans have fought the injury bug all season but are finally healthy and are playing their best ball. They put up over 500 yards of total offense against a well-coached Lawrence North team. The Titans have nothing to lose in this game, thus all of the pressure is on the Warriors to get to the championship game.

Carmel @ Lawrence Central: This will be your classic speed vs. power match up. Last year Lawrence Central’s season ended with a loss against Fishers High, a Hamilton County school, and they do not want to repeat that this year. All year we have commented about the Bears high-octane offense led by quarterback Dre Townsend and his 4×100 team. This week they will have to perform against the No. 1 defense in the state. Carmel’s defense has held opponents to less than 9 points per game this year while the Greyhounds offense looks like a 1980s Ohio State team with their bruising running game. Fans should be in for a treat because both teams are well coached and hungry to get to Lucas Oil Stadium.

Avon @ Pike: After a long and frustrating season, the Pike Red Devils seem to have found their mojo with a 63-20 sectional clobbering of Decatur Central. The Red Devils will need to play with the same intensity and focus if they are going to upset the 9-1 Avon Orioles. The Orioles have a balanced offensive attack that averages 191 rushing yards per game and over 138 yards passing per game. Pike will have to be physical on the line of scrimmage against an Avon offensive line that averages 6’2″ and 290 pounds.

Brownsburg @ Ben Davis: For years the Ben Davis Giants football program has been the kings of the Westside of town. They had pretty much dominated all the Westside schools up until four years ago when the Bulldogs made their run in the playoffs. The Bulldogs want to show that they are the new powerhouse program on the Westside and the days of the Giants dominance is over. The Bulldogs play like bulldogs; they are an extremely physical team and possess one of the most dominant running attacks in the state. They will have to play their best game to beat the fast, talented and well-coached Ben Davis Giants.
