Beware of Thanksgiving dinner

More by this author

It’s tempting with Thanksgiving to stuff one’s self with turkey, mashed potatoes and all the fixings, but the last place you want to spend a holiday is in a hospital.

Get a jumpstart on revamping your holiday habits with national Start Eating Healthy Day, Nov. 2.

Indiana University Health Cardiovascular is teaming up with the American Health Network and theĀ American Heart Association to offer free public cooking demos and healthy eating seminars throughout the city, in addition to healthy menu items at downtown IU Health hospitals. Carry those newly acquired healthy habits to the holidays, whenĀ IU Health cardiologistĀ Yazid Fadl says “everybody’s guilty of letting themselves go, regardless of their diet.”

Unfortunately that lapse in dietary judgment can lead to increased consumption of sodium and, ultimately, heart failure or other heart issues.

Moderation is key, Fadl notes, adding people need to be aware of the warning signs of heart failure:

Increasing difficulty breathing – even while lying down.

Sweating with minimal exertion.

Weight gain of 2-3 pounds or more in one day.

Leg swelling and chest discomfort.
