What makes it special: Superintendent Charles W. Webb, and his wife, Mother Susie Thomas-Webb, had the vision of a new, exciting congregation and launched a church on West 11th Street in an area called “down in the bottom.” Due to highway construction, the church had to move to its present location in 1954 and was renamed 28th Street COGIC.
The church progressed spiritually by placing a strong emphasis on meeting the total spiritual needs of members and getting their souls “filled with the Holy Ghost.” It also became known for its very popular district revivals.
In 1983 Nathaniel Draughn and his wife, Thelma, friends of the Webbs, assumed leadership of 28th Street COGIC. Under their guidance, the congregation has been introduced to new initiatives devoted to causes such as youth mentoring, community outreach and Christian education. Draughn also currently serves as superintendent of the Mt. Zion District for Church of God in Christ.
