Car Free Day on Sept. 19 urges Hoosiers to ditch solo drives in favor of carpools, bikes and buses for their daily commutes.
The initiative is designed to create cleaner, healthier communities by reducing carbon emissions.
“Car Free Day is kind of a challenge that encourages people to think about how they could get around in a more environmentally friendly way, whether that means working from home, taking a bus, carpooling or even biking to work,” said Jennifer Gebhard, executive director of the Central Indiana Regional Transportation Authority.
There will be informational booths and live music on Monument Circle to celebrate the day.
Organizations across the city are competing in the corporate challenge for the most employees participating. Groups include Bicycle Garage Indy, Browning Day, Citizens Energy, Eskenazi Health, Health by Design, IU Indianapolis, Salesforce and more.
Participants can register to go car free at commuterconnect.us/carfreeindy and be entered to win a $250 gift card.
