The city of Indianapolis and the state of Indiana finalized the agreement to exchange several properties, including the historical site of the former Indiana Women’s Prison.

In exchange for the former Indiana Women’s Prison property at 401 N. Randolph St., the State will acquire the property at 2600 S. Harding St. and a portion of 710 N. Sherman Drive.

Under the terms of the agreement, the state is expected to take full possession of the Harding Street property in 2026 following the relocation of Indianapolis Animal Care Services. The property exchange is scheduled for completion by November 2024.

The exchange is intended to begin a redevelopment and revitalization project at the site of the former Indiana Women’s Prison.
