Indianapolis Cultural Trail, Inc. announced the return of Curling on the Canal, an experience that brings the unique sport of curling downtown.
The experience will be at the Vermont Street Plaza on the Downtown Canal and is open now until March 2025. The activity is free, family-friendly and utilizes two synthetic curling rinks, the first of their kind in Indy.
“We are so happy that Curling on the Canal is returning to the Downtown Canal this winter,” said Iris Dillon, administrator of public spaces and programming for Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Development. “We can’t wait for families to spend time at one of our most loved public spaces and learn more about this fantastic winter sport.”
League play will be introduced this year, as well as Learn to Curl clinics every Sunday from 1-3 p.m. until March 2. The class will include instructors from the club who will teach participants the basics of curling and engage in friendly matches. There is no charge to participate in the clinics, and all ages and abilities are welcome.
Teams of two can now compete in a three-week league on Fridays (January 12, 19 and 26) from 3-5 p.m. Each team will have 30 minutes in a match against another team. The league is beginner-friendly and open to all ages and abilities. Registration can be found here and is $30 per team.
Open curling hours will be available throughout the week on a first come, first served basis. Hours vary by staffing and weather but will generally be Monday through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“The Cultural Trail makes it easy for Indy residents to be active, even in the winter months” said Kären Haley, Indianapolis Cultural Trail executive director. “We’re excited to bring back Curling on the Canal for a second year, and we hope that Indy residents will take advantage of this fan-favorite outdoor winter activity and also learn a new skill, thanks to our partnership with the Circle City Curling Club!”
No experience or equipment is necessary, but it is suggested to wear warm clothes that allow a wide range of motion and sturdy shoes. For more information and programming, visit indyculturaltrail.org/calendar.
