Shebella’s shines

One of Fishers’ newest restaurants opened its doors June 17 and business has been booming ever since. Not a stranger to working with food, Shebella’s Pizza & Deli owner James Hines shared the idea with his father-in-law about opening a local restaurant.

“I was at Steak ‘n Shake for 21 years,” he said. “My father-in-law and I wanted to secure his retirement so we opened up this restaurant.”

Having named the restaurant after his two daughters, Shelby and Gabriella, Shebella’s, 7035 E. 96th St., combines the fresh taste of a deli with the warm, flavorful Italian taste of a pizzeria.

Looking over the menu, I was amazed at how many different types of food I had to choose from. There was something for those who preferred low-fat, gluten free, spicy and vegan. From traditional nachos to Shebella’s Famous Cheese Steak, there was definitely something on the menu to please everyone’s taste buds.

For an appetizer, I enjoyed the cheese and pepperoni stuffed breadsticks, topped with melted butter and crusted with parmesan cheese, served with my choice of spicy cheese dip. But Shebella’s isn’t that typical restaurant that gives you more breadsticks than cheese sauce (I hate that), but they give you a huge cup with enough cheese to dip every bite of every breadstick and still have some left.

The breadsticks were amazing, but I had to save room for the entrée. Having trouble choosing between the sliced corned beef, Swiss cheese and spicy mustard on marbled rye that I saw on another gentlemen’s plate, and the grilled chicken club – chicken filet topped with provolone cheese, bacon, lettuce and tomato served on a pretzel roll with mayo, I asked my waitress, Karolyn Curran, for suggestions.

“All of the food is good but I suggest that you have my favorite – pulled-pork sandwich,” Curran said. “Our meat for the pulled pork is steamed overnight instead of baked like some.”

Having no apprehension, I went for the suggestion and engaged myself in a pulled-pork spicy barbecue sandwich, served on a pretzel roll and topped with french-fried onions and a side of onion rings.

Shebella’s signature barbecue sauce accented the steamed taste of the pork. Steaming the pork instead of baking it seemed to have given it a less greasy texture. Nevertheless, I was quite impressed with the unique taste of the sandwich.

And for dessert, a variety of double chocolate, chocolate and vanilla and strawberry cheesecake bites were available.

If you’re ever in the Fishers area and have a craving for pulled pork, cheese steak, three-cheese grilled cheese or perhaps an abundant buffet bar, go by and give Shebella’s a try.
