Judah Band brings high-energy praise to Gospel Explosion

With their fresh look, eclectic sound and steroid-like zest for Christ, Judah Band’s celebrity is growing. And for good reason – this gospel group is able to minister to a wide audience.

Lead singer, Randy Weston was an established secular musician and producer, but wanted to use his gift to honor and glorify Christ. Weston assembled some friends for a project but realized the team had something very solid.

“When you have people who have the same drive, the same motive and outside of the music, the same desires, you want to be around those people. When we’re together on stage or wherever we are, that’s a moment from chemistry and love that we built to help other people,” said Weston.

For Judah Band’s 12 members, it’s all about high-energy praise. Weston said the meaningful lyrics about the Lord are put to pop music and occasionally the band dabbles in rock, soul and Christian music.

Weston added that many people aren’t fans of the method Judah Band uses to win sinners to Christ. Despite threats and critics, he said the band knows its purpose and plans to continue praising the Lord.

“There are a lot of people who are not going to come to church to hear a choir. What we do musically is true to who we are. I always say, rockers need Jesus too,” said Weston who comes from a traditional gospel background. “We have enough choirs to cover the saved folk, but there’s a whole group of people who want to hear it a different way.”

Naturally Judah Band attracts a younger crowd but older listeners also enjoy their music.

Judah Band simply wants to show the world how God really is and what he truly cares about. Listeners understand that message because the band has gone beyond Indianapolis and done concerts across the United States.

The lyrics and sound only hold so much importance. Weston said that even if one person comes to know Christ during their shows, they have done their job.

Judah Band may create heavenly sound, but they are first and foremost a family (in some instances, literally). In order to practice what they preach, the band holds each other accountable, stays connected to their local church and as a group, have a 5 a.m. prayer line three days a week.

Judah Band was formed three years ago and they are still going strong. Their music can be purchased online at iTunes.com, walmart.com or CDbaby.com including “Search and Rescue,” their latest album.

They are currently working on a live DVD project called “Judah Band Live Out Loud” which includes Shortridge Middle School’s marching band and other special guests.

Those who want to see what Judah Band is all about, can do so at the Gospel Music Explosion Friday, Sept. 30 at 7:30 p.m. at the Madame Walker Theatre Center, 617 Indiana Ave. Doors open at 7 p.m. and tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.
