(June 26, 2012 – Indianapolis) – FitCity Indianapolis, a social marketing initiative that launched in 2005, announced that it is working with coalition leaders to utilize the current FitCity Indianapolis resources to support the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis’ Top 10 by 2025 Initiative and the efforts of its coalition partners.

FitCity was one of the first organizations to recognize the childhood obesity crisis before the issue was on the daily radar of the city. According to The Health Foundation of Greater Indianapolis, its primary funder, FitCity has met its goal of raising fitness awareness and connecting families to healthy resources. As of June 30, The Health Foundation of Greater Indianapolis will have successfully fulfilled its seven-year funding commitment to FitCity.

“We are very excited to see that the work we have done for nearly a decade to make Indianapolis a ‘fit city’ will continue through the leadership of the YMCA and its coalition partners,” said Betty Wilson, president and CEO of The Health Foundation of Greater Indianapolis. “While it is bittersweet, we are very confident in the work of this new coalition and are extremely excited about positive energy and direction of the Top 10 by 2025 coalition.”

FitCity Indianapolis was established in 2005 as a social marketing initiative to help the Indianapolis community fight child obesity. Its goal – then and now – has been to provide families with the information, resources, recipes and support to live healthy, active lives. Leaders with FitCity, a division of Learning Well, Inc., The Health Foundation of Greater Indianapolis, and Top 10 by 2025 believe the early work of the FitCity program set the groundwork for making Indianapolis community one of the top 10 healthiest communities in the United States over the next 13 years.
