Be a tutor at School on Wheels

More by this author

School on Wheels seeks to recruit, train and implement 100 new volunteers for the beginning of the fall school semester to provide tutoring to youth living in Indianapolis homeless shelters.

Becoming a volunteer tutor provides a wonderful opportunity to enhance the educational opportunities of children impacted by homelessness. By demonstrating consistency and encouragement, you will give a child the belief that his/her education is not only important but also possible despite their circumstances.

To become a School on Wheels tutor, you must be at least 14 years of age or accompanied by a parent. Tutors are asked to commit to one hour a week for a semester. We will work with your schedule to ensure that you will have the opportunity to tutor at the same shelter weekly. Interested tutors must complete a volunteer application, participate in a short over the phone interview, attend a training/orientation session and pass a criminal background check before getting started. This will allow you to learn more about the tutoring services you will be providing and how to make the most impact as a volunteer.

With the help of volunteers, School on Wheels is working to help eradicate homelessness by providing educational opportunities for children. Every child deserves an education, and our volunteers assist to ensure children impacted by homelessness receive one.

Help us break the cycle of homelessness for Indianapolis youth by volunteering today! For more information, contact Laura Alvarado, Director of Volunteer Programs, at (317) 202-9100.
