Lights, Camera, Action, (and a whole lot of coffee)

Budding filmmakers from across Indianapolis took part in a weekend of adrenalin, creativity and very little sleep. Their goal was to write, record and edit a quality film in under 48 hours. The event, part of Indy Film Fest, culminates this week during two screenings at The Toby Theater at Newfields, where a panel of judges will select one winning team.

Participant Keyen Macklin says she fell in love with acting and filmmaking while watching reruns of the Cosby show with her grandmother. She participated in the 48 Hour Film Project a few years ago, but this is her first time leading her own team.

“(Last time) I just had to show up and help, but we shot late at night, at 3 a.m., and there was not a lot of not sleep happening.” Macklin said. “This year, I have my own team. Before we even started, I have been busy preparing props, scouting shooting locations and lining up my cast.”

At a kick-off event, each team was given two genres to choose from (Macklin’s options were a dark comedy or a family feature) and a few characters and props for inclusion in each film. Beyond that, it was up to the teams to let their imagination and wit lead them.

The winning participant will walk away with more than just bragging rights. One film will be selected as “Best of City,” and the team will receive editing software, a sweet trophy and a screening at Filmapalooza 2019, a global festival featuring winning films from each participating city. The winner at Filmapalooza will receive a $5,000 cash prize.

Jessica Turner, with Indy Film Fest, says this is the event’s third year locally, and both judges and participants are excited to take part.

“(The judges) really talk it over. They have a lot of pressure, but they are really diligent about making sure they are making the right choices,” said Turner. “It’s a crazy challenge. I went to school for video production myself, and I don’t know how the teams do it. Creating a film in 48 hours is insane. It’s hard because you can always keep editing and be a perfectionist but, unlike most films, you have a deadline to get this done. It’s a challenge, it’s rewarding, and it’s really fun.”
