A new play reflecting on grief and loss during the pandemic is set to take the stage this weekend.
Presented by LateBloom Productions, “Encounters,” a new stage play exploring themes of grief and tragedy, will take the stage June 21-22 at the Indiana Historical Society. Inspired by a true story, “Encounters” was written and set during the COVID-19 pandemic and tells the story of a woman’s experience with loss, aiming to take audiences on a journey of self-reflection and emotional healing, according to a press release.
“My hope is that the people will come and relate to the story and feel inspired and encouraged to explore healing on their own terms” Regina F. Smith, founder of LateBloom Productions said in a statement. “When I lost my mother to COVID in 2020, I didn’t think I could recover. It was so unexpected, and I thought I had more time with her. This play is my process of healing and moving forward while carrying her lessons with me.”

LateBloom Productions produces a variety of theatrical productions each year in addition to offering creative and technical writing services and assistance to aspiring authors. Smith, who is also an author, playwright and minister, said her company aims to uplift a “community of storytellers and provide a platform for voices that need to be heard.”
As many people try to return to a sense of normalcy in the wake of a global pandemic, Smith said “Encounters” aims to provide a safe space for collective mourning and be a beacon of hope for a brighter future.
“Grieving is a journey and cannot be dictated by others,” Smith said. “It’s a personal and sacred experience.”
“Encounters” premieres at 7 p.m. on June 21 and at 5 p.m. on June 23 at the Indiana Historical Society, Basile Theatre, 450 W. Ohio St. Tickets start at $30 and can be purchased on Eventbrite.
