More than three dozen volunteers from KeyBank and the Edna Martin Christian Center teamed up to pack 10,000 meals to fight hunger in Indianapolis.
The event gathered volunteers for two hours to weigh, pack and sort meals with Million Meal Movement, an Indianapolis company dedicated to feeding the hungry and teaching the importance of volunteerism.
Founded by Dan and Nancy Hintz in 2007, the Million Meal Movement has packed over 36 million meals for those in need. Each pack consists of vitamins and minerals, dried vegetables, soy protein and rice. More than 6 million Hoosier families have benefited from their service since their founding.
Nancy Hintz spoke to the volunteers before they started packing the meals.
“The need is so great, and we know that we’re going to be addressing that need,” Hintz said. “I really appreciate (the volunteers) being here today and partnering with us.”
KeyBank is dedicated to volunteering in the community, with thousands of KeyBank employees contributing their time to giving back. A recipient of the Civic 50 award recognizing their community efforts, KeyBank began their initiative with the Neighbors Make the Difference Day in 1991. Since then, they continue to prioritize volunteer work.
“This is two hours out of our day that will be two hours well spent,” said Yvonne Harrington, corporate responsibility officer for Indiana and Michigan for KeyBank. “If you think about the folks that it’s going to assist on the other side, that is why we are here. The community is key.”
Edna Martin Christian Center also does work beyond this event for those who are food insecure. On Nov. 26, the center will host the Community Thanksgiving Dinner, open to everyone in and around Martindale Brightwood. The center is at 2605 E. 25th St. For more information, visit ednamartincc.org.
